Description

Sutter Roseville Medical Center (SRMC), a Sutter Health affiliate, seeks an outstanding educator for the position of Program Director for our Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program.

The Program Director of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program has the responsibility, authority, and accountability for: administration and operations; teaching and scholarly activity; resident recruitment and selection, evaluation, and promotion of residents, and disciplinary action; supervision of residents; and resident education in the context of patient care. The Program Director is responsible for the standards, quality, reputation, and ongoing improvement of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program.

The duties of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Program Director include but are not limited to:

Responsible for the accreditation, re-accreditation, and compliance associated with the Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program.

Design and conduct the program in a fashion consistent with the needs of the community, the mission(s) of the Sponsoring Institution, and the mission(s) of the program.

Administer and maintain a learning environment conducive to educating the residents in each of the ACGME competency domains.

Recruit and select candidates for the residency program through the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP), in alignment with the Sutter Health mission and values.

Develop and oversee a process to evaluate candidates prior to approval as program faculty members for participation in the residency program education and at least annually thereafter.

Ensure the quality of the clinical learning and working environment, didactic conferences, and scholarly activity opportunities at all sites that participate in the program.

Review all residents on a semiannual basis to ensure they are progressing in accordance with their PGY-level.

Make decisions regarding promotion, non-promotion, non-renewal of contract, or graduation for residents and program faculty members.

Oversee the development of an effective resident advising program.

Supervise any Obstetrics and Gynecology subspecialty training programs sponsored by the institution and linked to their core program to ensure compliance with the ACGME accreditation standards.

Have supervisory authority over all educational tracks in the Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program.

Ensure that the residency does not place excessive reliance on residents for service as opposed to education.

Maintain active clinical practice, in general, Obstetrics and Gynecology or one of the subspecialties of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Provide accurate statistical and narrative information in accordance with the requirements of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education and the ACGME’s Review Committee for Obstetrics and Gynecology. This includes but is not limited to the program application forms, the annual program resident updates to ADS, and ensuring that the information submitted is accurate and complete.

Submit accurate and complete information required and requested by the DIO, GMEC, and ACGME.

Submit reports to program, faculty, and fellow performance to the Graduate Medical Education Committee (GMEC) as requested by the DIO and/or the Chair of the GMEC.

Develop program-specific policies.

Develop program curriculum.

Ensure the implementation of policies and procedures consistent with the institutional and program requirements, including but not limited to policies for resident duty hours and the working environment, moonlighting, grievance procedures, and due process, as established by the Graduate Medical Education Committee, and in compliance with the ACGME Institutional Requirements.

Maintain current knowledge of the accreditation and operational requirements of the residency program, including monitoring current trends and anticipating changes.

Maintain working knowledge of GME finance and reimbursement as it pertains to the Obstetric
and Gynecology Residency Program and associated fellowship programs.

Obtain approval and written signature of the DIO for:

  • All applications for ACGME accreditation of new programs
  • The addition or deletion of a participating institution
  • A change in the structure, length, or format of the educational program
  • A change in the approved resident complement
  • Progress reports requested by the Review Committee
  • Responses to all proposed adverse actions
  • Requests for an increase or any change to resident duty hours
  • Voluntary withdrawals of ACGME-accredited programs
  • Requests for appeal of an adverse action
  • Appeal presentations to a Board of Appeal or the ACGME
  • Proposals to ACGME for approval of innovative educational approaches

Establish the clinical assignments and schedules of the residents to achieve the educational objectives of the program. Resident schedules and assignments for each resident in the program are expected to be established for the entire academic year no later than June 1 for the upcoming academic year beginning July 1.

Demonstrate scholarly activity as evidenced by activities such as peer-reviewed funding publication of original research in a peer-reviewed journal, publication or review articles of chapters in textbooks, publication or presentation of case reports or clinical series at local, regional, or national professional and scientific society meetings.

The Program Director is expected to participate regularly in clinical discussions, rounds, journal clubs, and research conferences in a manner that promotes a spirit of inquiry and scholarship. The Program Director will demonstrate support for resident participation, as appropriate, in research and scholarly activities.

Work in cooperation with the Designated Institutional Official (DIO) and other members of hospital administration to assure the effective, efficient, and fiscally responsible operation of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program. The Program Director shall articulate a clear operational plan for the residency program, and advocate resources, including faculty, facilities, educational services or materials, and finances, required for optimal operation of the program.

Assure that residents are assigned clinical responsibilities appropriate for their level of training and level of knowledge and skill, are properly supervised in clinical assignments, and provide safe and effective patient care. The Program Director shall develop and maintain written supervision standards, requirements, and procedures in accordance with current ACGME requirements.

Reporting Relationships:

The Program Director has a collaborative reporting relationship with the Designated Institutional Official at Sutter Health and the Chief Medical Executive at Sutter Roseville Medical Center.

All faculty, subspecialty faculty, Site Directors, and physicians associated with the Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program will report to the Program Director.



Requirements

Qualifications of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Program Director:

  • Must have current certification in the specialty for which they are the program director by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ABOG) or by the American Osteopathic Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
  • Must have specialty expertise and a minimum of three years of experience as core faculty, associate program director, or program director in an ACGME -accredited Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of the most up-to-date Obstetrics and Gynecology requirements.
  • Include current licensure and appropriate medical staff appointment.
  • Include ongoing clinical activity.
  • Candidates with recent scholarly activity such as peer-reviewed funding, publication of original research or review articles in peer-reviewed journals, chapters in textbooks, publication or presentation of case reports or clinical series at scientific society meetings, or participation in national committees or educations organizations are strongly preferred.
  • Be licensed to practice medicine in the state of California.

Must include demonstrated experience in a leadership role:

  • Experience as a Program Director  
  • Experience as an Assistant/Associate Program Director or Site Director
  • Experience as a Core Faculty Member
  • Administrative program experience, such as serving on the program’s Clinical Competency Committee (CCC), Program Evaluation Committee, or GMEC, or serving as a fellowship Program Director
  • A leadership role in the program, such as chair of the department, chair of the CCC, research director, etc.
